Welcome to Ms. Myers Grade 1 Website!!
This website has been designed to help keep both students and parents up-to-date and informed as to what is going on in Ms. Myers grade 1 classroom, and at UPS.
There will be specific sections for areas of the curriculum including Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies to keep you aware of what units we are learning about, what the expectations are, and useful hints for home to further enhance what we are learning at school. There is also a page containing useful websites that you can explore with your child for the various areas, topics, and subjects we will be discussing in class. A calendar will be posted at the beginning of each month to remind you of any special days or events that will be happening during that month.
Any additional homework assigned, that varies from the class routine, I.e. home projects, papers, etc. will be posted on the home page, as well as on the calendar, to ensure it does not go unseen!
This site is a work in progress, I thank you for your patience. If there is anything you would like to see on this website or you would like to book a time to talk with me, please feel free to contact me at brooke.myers@yrdsb.edu.on.ca .

Hello!
The first day has come and gone and what a whirlwind!! Thank you to all the parents that were patient this morning through all the chaos of finding you child's class. It was a great first day. Lot's of information was learned in regards to rules and routines. We will be practicing these things a lot over the next couple of weeks to ensure the routines and expectations are learned. Asking your children about what they are learning will help to instill this in the classroom as well, I.e. bathroom routine, agendas, Tribes agreements, etc.
As
you can see, the site is a work in progress. However, I will be
updating it often as new things arise. See October for 3 new events
to come!!

Hello!! Thank you for registering!! Now that I have many interested parents, I will be using this MUCH more often.
I will have your children make a note in their agenda to keep you updated!
Thank you!!

Welcome to the new Website!! Sorry for the change in addresses, however, after curriculum night, I had a much better idea on how many people are interested in using the website! Thank you for showing your interest in the website, AND in paper free communication!! The new site was chosen mainly due to ease of use. With this site, I am able to post documents as a word/adobe file for you to download, and then print as you feel necessary... good idea for the calendar!! There are tons of links on the site, so be sure to click on anything that looks "different", I.e. underlined, a different colour, or a picture.
For the next while, I will be sure to include notes in your child's agenda if new material is posted. However, check the site often, as I will not always use the agenda for this purpose.
Thanks for helping the class GO GREEN!
PS... You can also access this website via the UPS website :)

As some of you have may already heard, on Friday, October 16 there was a short presentation in the library for the whole school on Autism and Aspergers Syndrome. The presentation was short and focused mainly on the differences (especially with the senses) that people living with these differences possess. We also had a talk back in the classroom and read a book titled, Ian's Walk. I was able to make many connection for the children from my experience working with people with Autism and hopefully they didn't leave too confused. If you would like to talk to your children more about it, a great website to look at is the Autism Ontario site.
Also, Monday is the due date for our timeline project in Social Studies. Students will be presenting their timeline throughout the week. I have also asked each student to bring in a pattern from home on Monday. If the pattern is on something they cannot bring in, then I asked that they please draw it.
Thank you,
Have a GREAT weekend!

Hello Parents!! The last concept taught to develop independence for the Daily 5 is "Listening to Reading". This part of the Daily 5 allows the children to take part in listening to books on tape/cd/computer. Listening to reading is another way for children to develop fluency as they will hear many new words, phrases, and hear a lot of expression. In order for this to run smoothly, and to avoid children sharing headphones (and possibly head lice!) I am asking that all children come to school with a pair of their own, labeled, headphones. Cheap headphones for this purpose can be found at a dollar store for $1-$2 a pair.
Thanks for your support!!

Great news! The grade 1 class is fortunate enough to have grade 8 volunteers as reading buddies! The program will begin next week and will take place during the first 15 minutes of recess. Each child will be read to 1-2 times/week. They will only be staying in for 10-15 minutes at the beginning of recess and will not be in more than twice/week to ensure they still have recess! 1-3 grade 1 children will be paired with one grade 8 student (2 per day). This program is being developed in order to have the children more submerged in examples of fluent reading, and, the grade 8's involved are working towards points for their school letters!
A volunteer sign up form went home towards the beginning of the year for any parents interested in volunteering to read with children during the 100 minute language block. The program has been quite successful, however, there are no volunteers from our class, and therefore, our class has yet to be part of the program and benefit from it. Please, if anyone is available between 11:00am-12:50pm we would love to have some volunteers in our class during this time as well!! If you are free to help out, for any amount of time, once a week or even once every 2 weeks, please contact me via email, a phone call, or your child's agenda. I can then forward the information to Mary Ellen Edwards to add you to the roster and to further explain the program. You can also contact Mary Ellen yourself at extension 330.
Thank you!
PS. Tomorrow is Picture Day!

Tomorrow, Friday October 30th, we will be celebrating Halloween at school. Students can wear costumes if they would like, but they do not have to. We will be participating in a primary parade and we will be attending a Haunted House put on by the grade 8's. If your child would prefer not to go, I have arranged for them to be with 2 other teachers during that time (our regular Music time). We will not be having a "party" or eating treats. The school policy to to not have treats brought in for any sort of celebration. If you would like to provide Halloween "favours" for the kids, pencils, erasers, etc. are GREAT and can be purchased very cheap at the dollar store. We will be following the regular schedule tomorrow but I will add a Halloween "twist" for the kids.
Have a great weekend!!

Attention Parents!
We are in need of shoe boxes in order to complete our family dioramas!! I am sorry for the short notice, but would LOVE to be able to start our dioramas this Tuesday. If we cannot get enough, we will start them the following Tuesday. If you have one, or more than one, that you can spare, please send them in with your child.
Thank you so much for all your help!!!

Sorry for the short notice, could you please send in a pair of gloves with your children for our Fall Clean Up day? It would help to make the event a little more "green".
Thanks. And sorry again for the short notice!!

Wow! It is already the end of term 1!! With the end of a term comes the beginning of a new term, report cards, and interviews! Going home with your child on Monday, November 30 will be a collection of folders with work we completed in the first term. Please take the time to look over it this week, before your scheduled interview time, so you can get a better idea of what they have been working on in school. If you have any questions or would like to see more from their Monday Journal or Nelson Math Workbook, please let me know and I can have it ready for the interview. Also, I am encouraging parents to bring their students with them to the interviews this week. I will also include this in their agendas prior to the date to remind the students and parents. This will be a good time to speak all together of what they have been doing and learning at school to date.
Please look over the whole site to see what is to come in all areas of the curriculum for the new term. There will be a lot of new learning going on in this new term!
Please read the attached to participate in a fun classroom activity with your child!
Mystery Reader

December 10, 2009
Hi!! Sorry this has taken so long! For some reason I was unable to get onto this site to edit it since the last time I was on. Please click on the link (better late than never) for the December calendar!
Also, so far I have only had TWO responses to the Mystery Reader for new year. I really think it would be a fantastic experience for all the children to have a family member come in and read to the class. My mom came in this past week and the kids had a BLAST! Please consider a time that is good for you and let me know. Thank you!!
Sorry about the delay in the January calendar! I originally added it on January 6th and for some reason the link was not showing up! Ah technology!!
Here is it. I will be sure to get (and check!) February soon.
Look for updates on each of the pages!

February 1, 2010 There is a lot to be excited for in February! February brings us Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, Black History Month, 100's Day, the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2 class birthdays! As well, we will be beginning Reader's Theater on February 2nd... so keep practicing those just right books!! (Note sent home week of January 21, 2010. See Language Arts section for more information) February also brings the end of term 2 :( The year is going by way too fast! Please continue to check the website on a regular basis for updates in all subject areas.
February 20, 2010 Hello parents! This week at school is going to be a busy one! On Tuesday afternoon, our class, and Ms. Neu's grade 1/2 class will be having our own version of the 2010 Olympics in combination with Mr. Leon's gym class and with the help of Ms. Bos's grade 8 class. We will be participating in events such as speed skating, luge, hockey, broom ball, snow ball toss, and sled pulling! As well this week, our class, along with Ms. Neu's class and Mrs. Goldman's class will be performing "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong at the school assembly for Black History Month. The children have been working hard to learn the words to this song, and have also been working with some of the grade 8's to learn actions and sign language to go along with it. The assembly is in the school gym at 10:00am. Please feel free to come and watch the performance!
